Part of the eduSYMS platform

The offline-first OS that keeps education running.

eduSYMS Edge is the local-first data layer that lets schools, colleges, and rural learning hubs run on eduSYMS even when the network drops. Local devices keep working. The cloud catches up when the line returns. No data lost, no day stalled.

Why offline-first

Connectivity in African education isn't a given. Edge makes it not matter.

Most school platforms assume always-on broadband. Real institutions in South Africa, especially outside the metros, lose connectivity for hours, days, even weeks. eduSYMS Edge is built for that reality.

Without Edge

  • Network drops → the system stops
  • Teachers fall back to paper, then re-key it later
  • Attendance data lost between sites
  • Cloud-only platforms unusable in rural campuses
  • Power and bandwidth costs balloon

With Edge

  • Local-first data layer keeps every device working
  • Teachers capture in real time, online or offline
  • Background sync reconciles when the line returns
  • Runs on phones, tablets, low-power edge devices
  • Data resident in-country — POPIA-compliant by design

How it works

Local-first. Cloud-eventual. Always available.

A four-layer architecture that puts the data closest to where the work happens — and keeps every campus working in lockstep with the cloud whenever a connection is available.

  1. 1

    Local devices

Phones, tablets, and low-power edge devices run a PWA shell with local storage and full eduSYMS module access.

  2. 2

    Edge data layer

An on-site cache (or local server) holds the working set so teams stay in sync within a campus, even when the cloud is unreachable.

  3. 3

    Background sync

When connectivity returns, queued changes flow to the cloud and conflicts resolve with structured rules — not lost edits.

  4. 4

    eduSYMS cloud

Centralised view, executive dashboards, regulator reporting, and cross-campus governance — all backed by data resident in South Africa.

Common questions

eduSYMS Edge · FAQ

What is eduSYMS Edge?

Edge is the offline-first operating layer of the eduSYMS platform. It lets local devices and edge servers keep running every eduSYMS module without an active internet connection.

Do I need extra hardware?

No, in most cases. Edge runs as a PWA on any modern browser, phone, or tablet. For larger campuses, an optional on-site edge device (mini PC or Raspberry Pi-class hardware) speeds up local sync.

What happens when the connection returns?

Queued changes replay to the eduSYMS cloud automatically. Conflicts resolve via structured rules per record type, with full audit trails — no silent overwrites or lost edits.

Where is my data stored?

Locally on your devices first, then in the eduSYMS cloud, with primary residency in South Africa. POPIA-aligned by default.
